1. Apply and Get to Know Us
Start by viewing our open positions at solumber.com/careers and applying through our secure online portal. Our recruitment team reviews applications and typically reaches out to candidates we’d like to meet within a few business days.
The next step is an in-person interview. You’ll first meet with a member of our team who will share a brief presentation about Southern Lumber, our culture, and what it’s like to work here. This gives you the opportunity to decide whether our company feels like the right fit for you, too.
You’ll then meet one-on-one with the hiring manager to learn more about the position, ask questions, and get to know the person who would be your supervisor. If you’re selected to move forward, our team will contact you to begin the hiring and onboarding process with Human Resources.
2. Learn Your Role Alongside Your Team
Every job here is a little different, so your hands-on training is built around your position and experience. You’ll learn from the people you’ll work with every day, covering your responsibilities, safety practices, products, and how we take care of our customers.
3. Take a Trip “Around the World”
We call one part of our onboarding “Around the World.” New employees spend time learning what each department does and meeting the people who make it all happen.
A customer’s order takes teamwork. Around the World helps you see how your job connects with the work happening across Southern Lumber, from the first conversation with a customer through production, preparation, and delivery.
4. Keep Learning
There’s always more to learn about lumber, custom millwork, windows, doors, decking, marine materials, and the other products we offer. We partner with our vendors to provide free lunch-and-learns for employees, along with ongoing product support. It helps our team stay familiar with the products we carry and learn about new options on the market, so we can help customers find quality materials for their projects.
Safety is part of that learning, too. New employees receive hands-on instruction for the equipment, materials, and tasks involved in their jobs before taking on that work independently.
5. See Where Your Career Can Go
We want employees to feel confident in their jobs today and excited about where they could be in five years and beyond. Many of our team members have learned new skills, taken on new responsibilities, and grown into different roles here. Some have been part of Southern Lumber for 30, 40, or even 50 years.
