For more than 85 years, Southern Lumber and Millwork has partnered with builders, architects, remodelers, and homeowners across Charleston and the South Carolina Lowcountry. We specialize in custom residential projects, providing quality building materials, custom millwork, and trusted expertise from people who genuinely care about the success of every project.
Our lumberyards, manufacturing facilities, and showroom are an important part of who we are, but the people behind them are what make Southern Lumber different.
Many of our employees spend decades building their careers here. Some have celebrated more than 30 years with the company, others more than 40, and a few have recently celebrated 50 years of service. That kind of commitment creates knowledge, consistency, and relationships that benefit every customer we serve.
Three Generations of Family Leadership
Southern Lumber has remained family-owned and operated since 1941 by staying true to a simple philosophy: take care of your people, take care of your customers, and always do the right thing.
Today, President Thad Shuler represents the third generation of family leadership. Before Thad, the company was led by his mother, Joye Shuler, who continued the values established by her father. While our facilities, products, and technology have evolved over the years, our commitment to serving customers and investing in our people has never changed.
Retail and Customer Service
Walk through our front doors, and there’s a good chance you’ll meet Fred.
For decades, Fred has helped contractors, builders, and homeowners find the right products for their projects. His product knowledge is matched only by his willingness to help, making him a familiar face to generations of customers.
Outside in customer service, you’ll often find his brother, Anthony, helping customers navigate the yard, locate materials, and get loaded quickly. Together, they’ve helped create the welcoming atmosphere customers have come to expect at Southern Lumber.
Sales and Estimating
Every custom home starts with a plan, and our sales and estimating teams help bring that plan to life.
Our sales and estimating teams work alongside builders, architects, designers, and homeowners to recommend products, review plans, prepare material takeoffs, and coordinate deliveries.
Whether you’re selecting framing lumber, windows and doors, custom millwork, or specialty products, our team is focused on helping your project move forward with confidence.
Custom Millwork and Manufacturing
Custom millwork has been part of Southern Lumber’s story for generations.
Our millwork and moulder shops are home to skilled craftsmen from around the world who combine traditional woodworking techniques with modern manufacturing technology.
From historic moulding reproductions to custom doors, shutters, gates, brackets, and architectural millwork, this team creates products that can’t be found on a shelf. Their craftsmanship helps preserve Charleston’s architectural character while supporting today’s custom homes.
Distribution, Marine, and Delivery
Our Distribution Center supports projects across the Lowcountry by housing windows, doors, engineered wood products, and our marine-treated product line.
Once materials are ready, our shipping team takes over. Southern Lumber operates a fleet of 18 delivery trucks, serving jobsites throughout the Charleston area.
One familiar face on the road is George, who has spent years delivering materials across the Lowcountry. From historic downtown streets to waterfront communities, he knows the area like the back of his hand.
Working behind the scenes, Anthony’s son, Anthony, helps prepare customer orders for delivery each day. It’s one more example of the family culture that continues to shape Southern Lumber.
Operations and Administration
Every department works together to keep projects moving.
Our operations teams coordinate receiving, inventory, customer service, shipping, and deliveries so materials arrive where they’re needed, when they’re needed. Behind the scenes, our administration team supports employees and customers through day-to-day business operations.
Each department plays an important role, and every project benefits from the collaboration between them.
